Heavyweights ‘could’ join midfielder chase in another potential blow to Liverpool – report

Liverpool supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their side emphatically book their place in the last 16 of the Champions League following a 7-0 demolition of Spartak Moscow on Wednesday night.

Jurgen Klopp’s men knew that victory at Anfield would secure them top spot in Group E while a draw would at least guarantee them qualification, but there were no such worries among the Reds faithful as their team produced another attacking masterclass on Wednesday. A hat-trick from Philippe Coutinho, a brace from Sadio Mane, as well as strikes from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah sealed a sensational win for the Merseyside giants, who in turn extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to nine matches, while at the same time becoming the fourth English team to win their Champions League group alongside Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham.

Consequently, there have been many buoyant Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, although they are unlikely to be overly thrilled by a recent report from Correire dello Sport (via The Daily Mirror), which suggests that Real Madrid ‘could’ join the chase for midfielder Emre Can.

The 23-year-old made the move to Anfield back in 2014 but struggled for minutes under former boss Brendan Rodgers, yet has since become an indispensable member of the squad under current chief Klopp.

However, the Germany international’s contract at Anfield is set to expire in the summer and as of yet no extension has been agreed, which would allow the midfielder to speak to foreign clubs and possibly sign a pre-contract agreement next month.

And with Juventus having previously been linked with the 23-year-old, reports also suggest that European champions Real Madrid ‘could’ join the pursuit of the influential ace, in what looks set to be a further blow to Liverpool’s chances of convincing Can to remain at Anfield.

Landlord’s verdict: Emre Can’s contract situation at Liverpool has been discussed for a while now, what with his current deal set to expire in the summer and no extension as of yet agreed.

And as such speculation has been mounting about what the future holds for the midfielder, and reports suggest that European champions Real Madrid ‘could’ seek to join the race for the Germany international, while Juventus are also thought to be interested.

And further reported interest in the 23-year-old could make it even harder for Liverpool and manager Jurgen Klopp to convince Can to pen a new deal at Anfield, what with it less than a month until the midfielder can sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club.

Thus, it’s looking like an increasingly likely that Can will not be a Liverpool player come the start of next season.
